Description
- Activities
- The south carolina geological survey (scgs) will coordinate a southeastern atlantic coastal plain stratigraphic working group that will develop a consistent regional stratigraphic nomenclatural framework and create a workflow for identifying and resolving issues. The group will create updated interstate and regional stratigraphic charts and cross sections, publish updated versions of the final products, and ensure that rock unit descriptions in geolex reflect current knowledge. Work activities include:1) compile existing stratigraphic data for users,2) identify and prioritize unresolved stratigraphic issues for future work and draft a plan forfuture cooperative projects focused on resolving outstanding issues,3) using new age-dating results, develop a working stratigraphic chart of units, AND4) update geolex with refined terminology.deliverables and expected outcomes:1) summary notes from all workshop meetings and action items DEVELOPED2) state stratigraphic tables and regional stratigraphic correlation CHARTS3) data inventory of relevant materials for the southeastern atlantic coastal PLAIN4) a draft plan for future cooperative project(s)5) nomenclature changes - documented in formal-series publicationsintended beneficiaries: state agencies including departments of transportation, south carolina office of resilience, north carolina department of environmental quality, florida department of environmental protection. Additionally, all users of geologic maps and information (academics, consultants, builders, land-use planners) will benefit from coordinated stratigraphic work extending across state lines.
- Subrecipient activities
- Subrecipients will conduct inventories of available cores, hand samples, geophysical logs, outcrops, publications, and other related stratigraphic information, and will assess gaps in these datasets. Subrecipients will also produce state-level stratigraphic tables and correlation charts, and the cooperative group will create a working regional correlation chart. Partners will sample units in the field that are currently unresolved and will send samples for geochronology analyses to better constrain depositional ages of identified strata. All subrecipients will participate in two workshops to identify zones of agreement of unit equivalency between states and identify where additional work is needed. All subrecipients will also contribute to a draft plan for future projects aimed at resolving remaining stratigraphic issues between neighboring states in the southeast. Copies of any formal-series publications documenting nomenclatural changes will be provided.
