About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810), awarded a $812,868 Cooperative Agreement to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to complete detailed surficial and bedrock geologic mapping of three-and-a-half 7.5-minute quadrangles in three geographic areas of Washington state. The mapping and accompanying geophysical studies will characterize geologic hazards, support responsible natural resource use, and provide data to test models of crustal deformation from the state's oblique subduction zone. Through this award, DNR will publish 1:24,000 scale geologic maps, technical reports, and GIS databases by June 30, 2025. The project will also develop status maps and a state fact sheet outlining completed geologic mapping funded by the program. The geologic products delivered under this Cooperative Agreement will benefit a wide range of stakeholders, including geoscientists, policymakers, and planners.
Description
Project abstract summaryproject title: new geologic mapping in washington stateproject period: 07 01 2023 - 06 30 2025PURPOSEWASHINGTON department of natural resouces (WA-DNR) will complete detailed surficial and bedrock geologic mapping of three-and-a-half 7.5-minute quadrangles in three geographic areas. Each area will also benefit from detailed geophysical studies. The mapping EFF orts will have considerable impact on the public through the characterization of geologic hazards and the responsible use of natural resources. The new geologic mapping will also provide much-needed information to test models of how strain from an oblique subduction zone deforms the upper crust and is transferred between the forearc and backarc.activitieswa-DNR will conduct geologic mapping and geophysical (gravity) data acquisition starting on july 1, 2023. Field work will conclude by early november. Data processing, map creation, sample analysis, and writing will begin after FI ELD work and continue through april, 2024. Editing, peer review, map and pamphlet revision, and further analysis will continue through june, 2024. Final map layout, review, and publication will occur through the summer and fall of 2024 and final publication is scheduled for december, 2024.deliverables and outcomesnew geologic mappingwa-DNR will publish detailed surficial and bedrock geologic maps at 1:24,000 scale, technical reports, and GIS databases prior to delivery to the program officer by june 30, 2025. This will include the eatonville, ellensburg south, cougar mountain, and eagle gorge 7.5-minute quadranglesstatus mapswa-DNR will also develop PDF and GIS-based status maps showing the coverage of completed geologic mapping at scales of 1:24,000, 1:100,000, 1:250,000, and 1:500,000 for the state of washington. The maps will indicate which published products were funded by statemap. WA-DNR will also deliver a state fact sheet outlining the same data with a table showing statemap funds received by year for each project. These products will be delivered to the program officer by june 30, 2025.intended beneficiariesour selection of these areas for mapping and study is based on the recommendation of a broad-based panel of stakeholders, including representatives from counties and planners, aggregate and mining industries, academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, research geologists and hydrogeologists at the USGS, the U.S. Bureau of reclamation, other state agencies (department of transportation, department of natural resources), consultants and engineers, and others. As a result, projects often have multiple beneficiaries. In general our work is used by a wide variety of geoscientists, policy makers, planners, and others to: 1) identify and characterize geologic hazards 2) build understanding of water and earth resources to improve growth management act planning 3) provide mapping in areas of emerging societal need, and 4) understand geologic processes.there are no subrecipients for this award.
