About this award
The Utah Geological Survey (UGS), a division of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, received a $1,247,448 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810). The award will fund several projects over a 24-month period from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2025.
Key deliverables include:
- Completion of 6 new 1:24,000 and 1:62,500 scale geologic maps, with accompanying explanatory materials and GEMS Level 3 databases submitted to the National Geologic Map Database
- Development of 3D digitization workflows for geologic cross-sections and creation of a GEMS database
- Revisions to the Utah 1:500,000-scale state geologic map and GEMS database
- Compilation of a database of ranked geoheritage sites in Utah
- Investigations to resolve stratigraphic correlation and nomenclature issues in the Uinta Basin and Wasatch Plateau
These projects will benefit various stakeholders in Utah and across the U.S., including state and federal agencies, private industry, and the general public.
Description
Project abstract summaryutah geological surveyproject title: utah 2023 statemap proposalproject period: 07 01 2023 - 06 30 2025PURPOSE: the proposed projects address basic needs for geologic mapping at scales including 1:24,000, 1:100,000, and 1:500,000 across utah. Additional projects address state and federal needs for 3D geoscience, stratigraphic correlation, gems workflow, geoheritage, and updating ngmdb databases.activities: the utah geological survey (UGS) proposes projects for the national cooperative geologic mapping program statemap funding opportunity. All projects will have 24 monthperiod of performance that ends on june 30, 2025. In part i (new mapping), guidance criteria (GC) 1, the UGS proposes to complete 6 new maps that include 4 7.5 quadrangles (huntsville, francis, blanding north, and a revised and scope reduced 60 of dromedary peak), part of one 30 X60 quadrangle (wildcat MT. W), and a revision of one 30 X60 quadrangle (panguitch). The UGS will also complete correlative gems conversions for 6 published maps (lyman, lake mountain, farmington, allens ranch 7.5 quads and the LOA w and rush valley 30 X60 quadrangles). In part II U.S. Geoframework initiative (usgi), utah geological survey propose the following: in GC3, develop a workflow to digitize select cross sections in 3D and provide these data in a gems-formatted database. In GC4, to address existing geologic and cartographic comments and revisions on the state 1:500,000-scale geologic map. In GC5, to complete the final publication and creation of a gems level 3 database of the grouse creek 30 X60 geologic map. In GC7, revise and reduce the scope originally proposed to only include improving utah data and links to data in the national geologic map database(ngmdb). In GC9, to further refine and update our gems capabilities and workflows. In GC10, to compile a database of ranked geoheritage sites in utah. In GC14, to investigate and resolve stratigraphic correlation and nomenclature for the flagstaff and wasatch-colton formations in the southwestern part of the uinta basin and wasatch plateau.deliverables and outcomes: deliverables and outcomes for all part 1 projects will include pdfs of the 1:24,000- and 1:62,500-scale geologic maps with accompanying explanatory materials. Submission gems level 3 databases of the accompanying maps mentioned above to the ngmdb. Part 2 deliverables will include PDF maps, accompanying explanatory materials, reports, gems and other databases as enumerated in the proposal.intended beneficiaries: the proposed projects will benefit a range of constituents that include 1) the citizens of utah, 2) the citizens of the U.S.a, 3) private interests related to development, energy and mineral resources, water resources, and other business interests, and 4) various state, local, and federal governing bodies.
