About this award

This $694,381 cooperative agreement, awarded by the U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810), funds the Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS) to complete 1:100,000 scale geological maps for the state of Indiana by 2030. The project will map all areas of Indiana south of the 40th parallel, including bedrock exposures, glacial deposits, karst landscapes, and natural resources such as coal, oil, and industrial minerals. The project will train new geological mappers, enhance data accessibility, and engage with rural communities and underrepresented groups. Key deliverables include full-time research geologists and mappers, business administration support, and information specialists. The project period is July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2025.

Description

Although the details of indiana s stratigraphic architecture have been largely addressed, the level of detail of geological maps is not of sufficient resolution to meet today s needs. The only cohesive statewide effort occurred between 1958 and 1972. That mapping produced 24 1:250K geological maps of bedrock, unconsolidated sediments, and combined bedrock and unconsolidated using negative scribing, screening, photo negatives, and offset printing. This mapping was later combined and revised at the 1:500K scale in the 1980S.activities: the current plan is to complete 1:100K maps for indiana by 2030, aligning with the 20162017 national cooperative geologic mapping program (ncgmp) vision and the USGS geoframework initiative (GFI).through 2025, the scope comprises all 1:100K quadrangles south of the 40TH parallel to the ohio river, encompassing virtually all bedrock exposures in indiana the wisconsin and pre-wisconsin glacial limits iconic karst landscapes and available coal, black shale, oil and gas, and industrial mineral resources. The impact of this plan will be to: 1) continue to train new geological mappers in indiana to produce derivative maps that address vital societal needs such as natural hazards, groundwater resources, and industrial and critical minerals 2) complete geological maps in areas of state emphasis, investment, and infrastructure development enhance collaborative environments at the igws, engaging data scientists and making our products more accessible and 4) engage rural communities and underrepresented groups in urban centers through directed outreach and fieldwork.deliverables:the six proposed projects represent a significant mapping, collections management, and data administration effort and will include full-time research geologists and mappers, business administration staff, and information specialists.
