Description
Project period 1 17 23 1 16 24PROJECT title integrating multiple data sources to develop climate adaptation strategies for inland fish and recreational fishingplain language public summary many agencies compile data from recreational anglers because recreational fishing has great social and ecological importance in the U.S. In 2020 alone, more than 42 million people participated in freshwater fishing. However, climate change may affect the numbers, sizes, and species of fish available to anglers. Agencies tasked with managing fisheries often keep records of angler catch and harvest to better manage fisheries. Existing tools can be used to determine how fish species important to anglers may change in growth or abundance. The proposed work will use existing databases in angler coupled with ongoing studies to relate regionwide trends in angler effort, catch, and harvest to environmental metrics. This work can help inform management strategies for predicted fish and angler behavior in a changing climate.activities to be performedimplement and maintain existing databases on angler catch and harvest, and climate change effects on fish relevant to angler data and literature focused on climate effect on fishes.test hypotheses based on existing data and tools related to angler catch and harvest, and effects of climate on data from existing tools related to angler catch and harvest, effects of climate change on fish, and ongoing casc funded projects to better integrate how climate change may affect not only the fish response (e.g., growth, recruitment), but angler responses to those potential changesdeliverables and expected outcomes propose a perpetuity protocol for both all databases used by 1) maintaining public accessibility to a portion of each database to maximize transparency, along with archiving complete provided datasets for traceability of all data, 2) identify a practicable schedule to ensure consistent and streamlined database updates, and 3) ingrain adaptability in both the creelcat and ficli database structure to ensure flexibility as future needs change.peer reviewed manuscripts will be developed to test the hypotheses mentioned above. Anticipate several manuscripts from these efforts, particularly as will obtain more data to include in ficli and creelcat, one initial publication will link existing growth data from cooperators with creelcat catch statistics to determine how fish growth and angler preferences change over a latitudinal gradient.intended beneficiary(IES)maintaining these databases from the 43 states that contributed to creelcat have up to date records of angler catch and harvest, which will benefit their state level management of sport fishes, but also benefit regional and national agencies (e.g., US fish and wildlife service) in their management of sport fishes. A primary beneficiary of this project is any researcher, manager, or policy maker that needs to understand angler harvest and or how fish may be affected by climate change. Since these are both publicly available databases, any stakeholder interested in anger catch and climate change can benefit from this project.subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of awardnone
