PROJECT ABSTRACT SUMMARY: BEDROCK GEOLOGIC MAPPING OF THE UPPER NUTRIA QUADRANGLE,PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE: 05/15/2022 THROUGH 05/14/2023PLAIN LANGUAGE DESCRIPTION OF AWARD PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS AWARD IS TO TRAIN THE NEXT GENERATION OF GEOSCIENTISTS THROUGH A GUIDED EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE. THIS PROPOSAL WILL FUND AN EDUCATION-FOCUSED GEOLOGIC MAPPING PROJECT WITH IMPLICATIONS FOR GROUNDWATER MANAGEMENT IN RURAL AND ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES IN NEW MEXICO. SPECIFICALLY, TWO UNDER-GRADUATE STUDENTS WILL BE TRAINED TO CONDUCT GEOLOGIC MAPPING IN THE ZUNI MOUNTAINS OF NEW MEXICO. THE STUDENTS WILL CONDUCT GEOLOGIC MAPPING WITH THE GOALS OF: 1) UNDERSTANDING THE GEOLOGIC HISTORY OF THE AREA, AND 2) ASSESSING THE EFFECTS OF ROCK FRACTURES ON GROUNDWATER FLOW IN THE AREA.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE EXTENT, ORIENTATION, AND DISTRIBUTION OF DIFFERENT ROCKS IN THE WESTERN ZUNI MOUNTAINS OF NEW MEXICO WILL BE DESCRIBED. THIS MAPPING EFFORT WILL INVOLVE: EXTENSIVE HIKING; DETAILED MEASUREMENTS OF ROCKS WITH BRUNTON COMPASSES AND/OR IPADS; ROCK UNIT THICKNESS MEASUREMENTS WITH JACOBS STAFFS; GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION MEASUREMENTS WITH GPS UNITS; PHOTOGRAPHING KEY/INTERESTING GEOLOGY AND FIELD RELATIONSHIPS; COLLECTING GEOLOGIC SAMPLES WITH HAMMER AND CHISEL; AND MAPPING WITH PENCIL/PEN ON PAPER BASE MAPS. UPON RETURNING FROM THE FIELD, THE STUDENT WILL CUT ROCK SAMPLES AND PREPARE THIN SECTIONS FOR PETROGRAPHIC (MICROSCOPE) ANALYSIS, AND CONDUCT IMAGE ANALYSIS OF FRACTURE SETS.DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THIS PROJECT WILL PRODUCE A 1:10,000 SCALE GEOLOGIC MAP OF THE NORTHERN UPPER NUTRIA 7.5 MINUTE QUADRANGLE, NEW MEXICO. ONE BALANCED CROSS SECTION DRAWN PERPENDICULAR TO THE AXIS OF THE NUTRIA MONOCLINE AND ACROSS STRIKE OF THE STINKING SPRINGS AND MCGAFFEY FAULTS WILL ALSO BE INCLUDED IN THE MAP REPORT. THE FINAL REPORT SUBMITTED AT THE END OF THE PROJECT PERIOD WILL BE THE PRIMARY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT MAPPER'S SENIOR THESIS.INTENDED BENEFICIARY(IES): WEST TEXAS A & M UNIVERSITY
