About this award

The University of Massachusetts was awarded a $475,420.73 cooperative agreement from the U.S. Geological Survey under the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808) to conduct research on climate, storms, and the drivers of cyanobacteria blooms in Lake Superior. The goal of the three-year project, beginning April 1, 2021, is to support USGS efforts to examine the geological structure, water, mineral, and biological resources of the national domain by studying how climate and weather patterns influence harmful algal blooms in Lake Superior. As part of the award, the University of Wisconsin-Madison will receive a subaward to assist with data collection and analysis of cyanobacteria blooms and their relationship to storms in the Great Lakes region.
