Description

The lincoln county conservation district (lccd) received a grant from nevada division of forestry (NDF) for coordinated treatment of russian olive (elaeagnus angustifolia) and salt cedar (tamarix SPP.) trees on private land in pahranagat valley, lincoln county, nevada. These trees are exotic invasive species that have infested riparian forest and wet meadows in the valley, increasing fire risk and degrading private ranch lands and wildlife habitat, including habitat for several threatened and endangered species. In the fall of 2024, lccd hired a contractor to mechanically remove all the trees over 151 acres. Unfortunately, the costs were greater than anticipated, and now the lccd is short on funds required for foliar herbicide treatment of resprouts and seedlings. In this project, the service will provide funds for the follow up herbicide treatments. This project supports priorities identified in the FY26-30 department of the interior draft strategic plan specifically, goal 1 project is making private ranch land more productive, and goal 3 project is making ecosystem healthier through removal of invasive species (objective 3.4). This project also supports section 3 (encouraging local wildfire preparedness and response) of the executive order empowering commonsense wildfire prevention, as these exotic trees are very fire prone.
