Description
This project will enhance 1.6 miles of the east fork carson river and 3 miles of carson tributary streams (markleeville creek, pleasant valley creek, and hot springs creek) and facilitate sustainable grazing management and wildfire prevention on the 1,690-acre park ranch by installing 6,000 FT of new wildlife friendly fencing removing 2,100 FT of outdated and unnecessary five-string barbed wire fencing and converting 7,000 FT of five-string barbed wire to wildlife friendly fencing. Additionally, three water gaps will be created to improve livestock watering on the property. Better fencing and livestock watering infrastructure will allow for sustainable grazing practices, wildfire mitigation, facilitate an accessible big game migration corridor, enhance lahontan cutthroat trout habitat, and improve public access for fishing and outdoor recreation. This project supports goals 2.3, 3.1, and 3.3 of the draft DOI strategic plan framework 2026-2030, focusing on ensuring water conservation and reuse, enhancing of recreational fishing access on the e. Fork of the carson river, enhance hunting opportunity in the sierra nevada range by facilitating healthy migration corridor habitat, and wildfire prevention via sustainable grazing and upgrades to agricultural water delivery infrastructure. This project supports SEC. 3 of the empowering commonsense wildfire prevention and response executive order.
