Description
The cumberland county soil and water conservation district (cumberland county swcd) will work in collaboration with the U.S. Fish and wildlife service to implement targeted habitat conservation actions benefiting federally listed freshwater mussel species including: alabama lampmussel (lampsilis virescens), pale lilliput (toxolasma cylindrellus), and cumberlandian combshell (epioblasma brevidens) within the tennessee river basin. The focal watersheds are dominated by agricultural land uses and represent priority areas for implementing voluntary conservation practices that align with mussel recovery strategies, long-term watershed health objectives, and the working lands for wildlife initiative. This project will apply science-based conservation practices to improve habitat conditions for aquatic species on private lands. Activities will be tailored to meet species needs, maximize ecological benefit, and support working lands. Restoration techniques to be employed will include, but are not limited to, agricultural best management practices such as livestock exclusion fencing, aquatic organism passage, riparian buffer establishment, stream bank stabilization, alternative water systems, instream habitat restoration, and conservation technical assistance outreach.
