Description

This plant is found on the banks of the ST. John river on the edge of forested riparian buffers. Without an intact riparian buffer, the banks of this river cannot support this plant. Wood turtles, an at-risk species, is found in northern maine streams and rely on healthy riparian buffers. Through this award, the upper ST. John river organization (usjro) will purchase riparian plants, soil, nursery supplies, and potting materials. The usjro will raise these plants in their local small scale nursery and distribute plants to landowners in northern maine. In many areas, the wood turtle streams and the ST. John river has had the riparian buffer decreased or removed entirely. Replacing vegetation to the riparian zone will create better habitat conditions for wood turtles and furbish s lousewort.
