Description
The project site represents many wetland areas that were once-common in northern iowa that are no longer present on the landscape. The project seeks to conserve the unique natural resources associated with these wetland communities. Site vegetation currently consists of reed canary grass. The reed canary grass will be burned and sprayed in summer 2024 and earth work to scrape the basin will occur in fall 2024 or summer 2025 (with seeding of dry disturbed areas afterward). This restoration should create more biodiversity for wetland wildlife and other wildlife. IT should improve water quality for lime creek, which is immediately downstream (and for the cedar river which is further downstream). The restoration should specifically benefit migratory birds such as the mallard (anas platyrhynchos) sandhill crane (antigone canadensis) and should benefit amphibians reptiles like the spring peeper (pseudacris crucifer) painted turtle (chrysemys picta). The restoration should indirectly benefit pollinators like the candidate-for-listing monarch butterfly (danaus plexippus) and rare declining birds like the field sparrow (spizella pusilla).the restoration is in a priority HUC8 watershed and should also benefit the public by providing environmental ecosystem services and providing public recreational opportunities, in perpetuity.
