About this award

This $110,000 Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service under the Partners for Fish and Wildlife (CFDA 15.631) program, will fund stream restoration and riparian buffer improvements in Coweeta Creek, a tributary of the Upper Little Tennessee River in Macon County, North Carolina. The goal is to benefit endangered species including the gray bat, Indiana bat, northern long-eared bat, and eastern hellbender, as well as native trout populations. The Southwestern North Carolina Resource Conservation & Development Council Inc. will implement the 5-year project, which aims to stabilize the stream channel and enhance habitat resilience in response to impacts from increasing tropical storm events. The funded activities will support the program's mission of voluntary, incentive-based conservation on private lands to benefit federal trust species and their ecosystems.

Description

Coweeta creek is a tributary of the upper little tennessee river located in macon county, NC (identified as a high priority watershed in western NC partners for fish and wildlife strategic plan.) stream restoration will improve riparian buffers to benefit the endangered gray BAT (myotis grisescens), indiana BAT (myotis sodalis), northern longeared BAT (myotis septentrionalis), and at-risk TRI-colored BAT. Aquatic species will benefit the state endangered eastern hellbender, and designated trout waters. Native brook trout occur upstream, and brown and rainbow trout are found within the project area.
