About this award
This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service under the Partners for Fish and Wildlife program (CFDA 15.631) will provide $150,000 to the Northwest California Resource Conservation & Development Council to continue implementing erosion control treatments and expand inventory efforts to identify additional high-priority sediment source sites in the Scott River watershed and nearby watersheds in Northern California.
The key objectives of this 5-year project are to inventory, design, permit, and implement 15-30 high-priority treatments such as culvert cleaning, rolling and critical dip placement, rocked armored ford and vented ford installation, culvert upgrades, and fill excavation/rock buttressing on slumping cut fill banks. This work is expected to prevent 1,500-4,500 tons of road-related sediment delivery to critical cold-water habitats for coho salmon, Chinook salmon, steelhead, and Pacific lamprey in the region.
Description
This project will continue implementation of erosion control treatments at high priority sites on ecoforest trust management (EFM) properties in the scott river watershed, while expanding the inventory to identify additional needs in the southern half of the kidder creek watershed as well as the emigrant, pattison, french, and sugar creek watersheds. The inventory work will be coordinated with the scott river watershed councils program of training local natural resources technicians in road inventory programs. The need to continue to identify, design, permit and rapidly treat additional road sites is evident by both the past road failures and the success of the recent road upgrade work.project goals are to identify, prioritize and treat as many high priority road related sediment source sites as possible based on existing and planned road inventories of the EFM road system and utilizing proven techniques from past work. Project objectives are to inventory, design, permit and implement 15-30 high priority treatments consisting of: culvert cleaning, rolling and critical DIP placement, rocked armored ford and vented ford installation, culvert upgrades, and fill excavation and or rock buttresses on slumping cut fill banks. IT is estimated that this project will implement treatments that would prevent 1,500-4,500 tons of road related sediment delivery to key tributaries of the scott river. This will protect critical cold water spawning and rearing habitat for coho salmon, chinook salmon, steelhead, and pacific lamprey.
