Description
The springs stewardship institute (SSI) proposes to conduct pre-treatment (summer 2023) and two annual post-treatment (2024, 2025) monitoring inventories and assessments of three plummer springs in the moapa valley national wildlife refuge, before and after removal of invasive, nonnative palm trees. Inventory and assessment methods will document changes in: discharge field water quality parameters vegetation composition, cover and function and aquatic and riparian biota detected on the site. Inventories will involve a 1.5 to 2 HR site visits by 3-4 spring ecosystem experts. Data will be collected according to standardized SSI protocols that have been well-tested in a wide array of federal, state, tribal, and private landscapes throughout the southwest. Data will be entered into ssis free, secure, relational database, springs online and made available to the refuge managers. Deliverables to the US fish and wildlife service will include annual reports with appended data and photographs, and a geodatabase. The cost of this work will be 10,950 over the course of 2.5 YR. This monitoring project will provide the service with information on the success and rate of adjustment of these three spring ecosystems to non-native palm removal. SSI also offers training to the service staff, should the agency wish to pursue in-house monitoring in the future.
