Description

There is a body of 30 years of work and over 900 projects by island conservation, EER and others that has demonstrated the success of this approach. When rodents or other invasive vertebrates are eradicated nature brings back the ecosystems on the islands. Plants, birds and other species repopulate the islands, including endangered and threatened listed species and candidate species. Eradication of rats from several islands in puerto rico and the U.S. Virgin islands by dner, U.S. Virgin islands (usvi) department of planning and natural resources (dpnr), and other organizations has enabled significant recovery, to the U.S. Virgin islands tree BOA and several seabirds (pierce 2007 tolson ET AL. 2008). EER has had excellent success in previous eradication projects on others coastal habitat. For example, in 2010 in ratones and cardona islands, in 2015 in isla DEL frio, in 2018 in cayo lobo national wildlife refuge in culebra, among others. This last one in an important breeding area for the audubon shearwater. The project eradication of black rats (rattus rattus) on berbera CAY projects long term goal is to restore this coastal habitat through the eradication of invasive black rats and green iguanas on this small CAY in southern P.R. As a result, birds, reptiles, invertebrates, and plant life will come back to the CAY and the ecosystem will be restored. A long-term monitoring study of the effects of the RAT eradication on the cays biodiversity will be done to demonstrate success.
