Description
Ford s pond OAK habitat restoration phase II, project abstract summaryford s pond, in southwestern oregon, is a 202 acre property that includes a 95 acre former log pond since acquiring the property in 2014, the city of sutherlin, along with the friends of ford s pond, have been working to restore and develop the property as a community park with its large pond and variety of habitat types, the property has great potential for sensitive and federally listed species along with resident and migratory birds a plan to restore OAK savanna on the western portion of the property would provide valuable habitat for the previously endangered columbian white tailed deer, OAK obligate neotropical migrant birds, and at risk pollinators oregon s OAK habitats are thought to sustain higher levels of biodiversity than any other upland ecosystem type in the state, but with less than 6 of historical OAK habitat still on the landscape, IT is essential that we conserve and restore those that remain phase i of the project focused on the westernmost 25 acres of the site, and phase II will focus on an adjacent 25 30 acres the restoration plan again includes treating non native, invasive plant species with cutting or mowing and herbicide, seed collection and purchase , plant propagation and outplanting, along with site preparation and seeding native plants not only will the project enhance and restore habitat for the multitude of species that depend on IT, but IT will also provide a great opportunity for community engagement, environmental education, and conservation stewardship besides the city of sutherlin and friends of ford s pond, project partners include sutherlin high school future farmers of america students and teacher , local contractors, and a number of skilled and dedicated volunteers
