Description

The project titled multi-site pennsylvania streams habitat improvement, bank stabilization, infrastructure preservation, and wetland restoration will significantly improve both wetland and stream habitat at multiple locations and streams in pennsylvania. The completion of this proposed project will see the restoration of over 200 acres of wetland in two sites in pennsylvania. Restoration of at least 70 acres will be achieved by regrading areas within and adjacent to existing wetlands, removing hydrologic restrictions and instituting wetland plantings, all to restore wetland functions and values that were lost due to prior agriculture activity. An additional 130 acres with existing altered wetlands that were diked, deepened, and managed as open water impoundments will be restored through regrading impoundments and surrounding areas to allow for natural fluctuating hydrology that will support a wide variety of wetland vegetation and breeding and migratory and wintering bird species that are known to inhabit the region. Included in this project is the enhancement of aquatic habitat and the stabilization of eroding banks in over 1.75 miles of pennsylvania streams on private lands, resulting in a significant reduction in erosion and the subsequent sediment loading of the respective streams. At least seven different stream projects will be included in the project; five targeted sites with high vertical eroding banks that present a significant threat to local infrastructure and a general lack of aquatic habitat. At least two additional projects on pennsylvania streams will be selected for restoration where the sediment loads can be significantly reduced.
