About this award

The Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency awarded Massachusetts Institute of Technology a cooperative agreement valued at $2,736,846 on July 22, 2026, under the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy program (CFDA 81.135) to develop a fully integrated computational-experimental framework for discovering and scaling rare-earth lean, high moment magnetic alloys for next-generation energy and electrification applications. MIT will unify physics-informed machine learning, first-principles and atomistic modeling, carbon-lean full solid-state alloy synthesis, and high-throughput experimentation into a closed-loop materials discovery platform designed to identify promising multi-light-element transition-metal-based alloy chemistries and optimal processing conditions, accelerating transition from magnetic physics to deployable bulk alloy products. Performance occurs in Cambridge, Massachusetts through July 21, 2029.

Description

Massachusetts institute of technology this project proposes a fully integrated, theory-informed computational-experimental framework to accelerate the discovery and scalable production of rare-earth lean, high moment magnetic alloys for next-generation energy and electrification applications. Motivated by exceedingly long empirical development cycles and energy-intensive classical magnetic alloy fabrication routes, our approach unifies physics-informed ML, first principles and atomistic modeling, carbon-lean full solid-state alloy synthesis, and high-throughput experimentation into a closed-loop materials discovery framework. By synergizing these complementary efforts, the project aims to establish a predictive platform that rapidly identifies promising multi-light-element transition-metal-based alloy chemistries along with optimal processing conditions, creating an integrated design-to-fabrication workflow that accelerates the transition from magnetic physics to deployable bulk alloy products.
