About this award
The Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency awarded the University of Texas at Austin a $4.617 million cooperative agreement on July 7, 2026, under ARPA-E (CFDA 81.135) to develop a multiterminal multiport high voltage direct current solid state transformer (MTMP-HVDCSST) converter station designed to replace traditional HVDC substations.
The project develops next-generation MOSFET power modules and an oil-immersed silicon carbide converter submodule featuring ultra-high insulation capability to enable the MTMP-HVDCSST architecture. The hardware is intended to reduce the cost and physical footprint of integrating offshore wind energy while enabling scalable, reliable, and efficient multiterminal DC grids. Work is performed in Austin, Texas, with a period of performance through July 6, 2029.
Description
University of texas at austin. New award. Control number: 3499-1526 FOA number: DE-FOA-0003499 (DC-grids) project title: ''mtmp-hvdcsst: multiterminal multiport high voltage direct current solid state transformer enabled by an oil-immersed 30KV/1MW SIC converter submodule (CSM) with >150KV insulation capability'' this project is developing a revolutionary multi-terminal multi-port high voltage direct current solid state transformer (mtmp-hvdcsst) converter station to replace traditional, high-cost, and bulky hvdc substations. To enable this architecture, the team will design and manufacture next- generation mosfet power modules and a highly efficient, oil-immersed SIC converter sub module (CSM) featuring ultra-high insulation capability. Ultimately, this hardware will drastically reduce the cost and physical footprint of integrating offshore wind energy while accelerating the transition toward scalable, reliable, and highly efficient multi-terminal DC grids.
