About this award
The Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency awarded Form Energy, Inc. a $4.319 million cooperative agreement on January 21, 2026, under the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy program (CFDA 81.135).
Form Energy is developing a regenerative metal-air fuel cell technology that generates power by reacting metal fuel with oxygen and then regenerates that metal fuel using electricity. The project, titled "Regenerative Metal Fuels for Renewable Energy Transmission Without Wires," proposes to enable cost-effective and safe large-scale energy transport by leveraging existing logistics infrastructure rather than requiring construction of new electrical transmission lines. Form Energy collaborates with MIT and Propel Aero on this effort.
Work is performed in Somerville, Massachusetts, with performance concluding July 20, 2028. The award obligates $4.319 million.
Description
Form energy, INC. Control no. 3387-1981 vision open 2024 project title: regenerative metal fuels for renewable energy transmission without wires form energy (form), along with MIT and propel aero, is proposing a novel approach to large-scale, dynamic energy transport utilizing electrochemical processes and existing logistics infrastructure. Form energy, INC. Is developing a metal-air fuel cell, which uses metal fuel reacted with oxygen to generate power. The metal fuel can then be regenerated using electricity. This project will allow for cost-effective and safe transport of energy dense materials and address the time and cost limitations of building new electrical transmission lines.
