Description

Leveraging more than eight years of research in robotic assembly and two industrial partners who are pioneering opposite ends of the circular EV-LIB economy, the recipient will combine industrial-grade hardware and symbolic planning with the emerging class of open-world vision language models (OWL) to perform disassembly of commercial EV-LIB systems. The system will identify the necessary tasks and then use a symbolic planner to execute disassembly while relying on OWL models to ground symbols corresponding to the individual parts. Here, large language models (LLM) will be used to help a human operator to quickly train the robotic system on previously unseen battery types. To deal with uncertainty in perception and actuation, we are continuously resolving the symbolic plan, use a probabilistic framework to rank-order actions that the robot will take, and use LLM common sense knowledge to reduce uncertainty. The recipient will use a humanoid robot in concert with collaborative robot arms to handle wire harnesses, remove screws and parts, before dismantling the EV-LIB with a heavy-duty industrial arm. The recipient will demonstrate the proposed solution on serviceable battery packs such as the hyundai ioniq, chevy bolt, and toyota RAV-4, together with our partner universe energy, whereas the humanoid solution will also be demonstrated at our local partner mile hybrid automotive.
