About this award
The Department of Health and Human Services Indian Health Service awarded a $150,000 Cooperative Agreement to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community on January 1, 2026, under the Injury Prevention Program for American Indians and Alaskan Natives (CFDA 93.284).
The award funds a two-component injury prevention initiative serving enrolled community members in Arizona through December 31, 2030. The first component expands opioid abuse prevention by distributing protective lock boxes for secure storage of prescription opioids and drug disposal bags for safe neutralization and disposal of expired or old medications, addressing unintentional poisoning and medication diversion. The second component prevents unintentional firearm-related injuries in the home through distribution of gun safes for secure storage, integrated with a multifaceted firearms safety education program covering handling, storage, and injury prevention protocols. The program builds on the recipient's established injury prevention work dating to 2015, which has previously addressed opioid harm reduction, child passenger safety, and elder fall prevention. Expected outcomes include measurable increases in safe storage behaviors for prescription medications and firearms, and corresponding reductions in medication diversion, unintentional opioid exposure, and preventable firearm-related injuries.
Description
Srpmic injury prevention program - the salt river pima-maricopa indian community (srpmic) injury prevention program (IPP) has a proven history, dating back to 2015, of implementing data-driven, evidence-based interventions for critical public health concerns such as opioid harm reduction, child passenger safety, and elder fall prevention. As a part i tribal injury prevention cooperative agreement program (tipcap) applicant, this initiative builds upon these successful efforts to introduce an integrated, two-pronged project focused on expanding harm reduction and safe storage practices to reduce unintentional injuries among enrolled community members. The first component is an expanded opioid abuse prevention program to combat the risks of unintentional poisoning and medication diversion. This initiative will directly distribute two evidence-based resources to enrolled members: protective lock boxes for secure storage of prescription opioids and drug disposal bags for the safe neutralization and disposal of old or expired medications. This provides families with essential tools to maintain secure pharmaceutical control and mitigate community opioid abuse and diversion. The second component focuses on firearms safety through resource provision and education. To prevent unintentional firearm-related injuries in the home, the program will provide enrolled community members with gun safes for secure storage. This hardware distribution will be integrated with a multifaceted gun safety education program providing essential best practices for handling, storage, and injury prevention protocols. The overall purpose is to strengthen the community's infrastructure to prevent unintentional injuries and enhance home safety. The expected outcomes include a measurable increase in safe storage behaviors for both prescription medications and firearms, and a corresponding reduction in medication diversion, unintentional opioid exposure, and preventable firearm-related injuries. This project will directly contribute to the IPP's goal of raising health status and decreasing injuries across the salt river pima-maricopa indian community.
