FUNDING OPPORTUNITY NUMBER: HR001123S0052CATALOG OF FEDERAL DOMESTIC ASSISTANCE (CFDA) NUMBER(S): 12.910 RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENTPHOTONIC QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY OFFERS MANY CRITICAL ADVANTAGES, INCLUDING THE ABILITY TO PERFORM QUANTUMOPERATIONS AT ROOM TEMPERATURE, ULTRAFAST CLOCK SPEEDS, COMPATIBILITY WITH TELECOMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY,AND THE EASE OF NETWORKING MODULAR QUANTUM PROCESSING UNITS TO BUILD LARGE-SCALE SYSTEMS. OVERTHE LAST TWO DECADES, TABLETOP EXPERIMENTS HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE POTENTIAL OF PHOTONIC QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY,AS EXEMPLIFIED BY THE DEMONSTRATIONS OF QUANTUM SUPREMACY, THE GENERATION OF ENTANGLED STATESWITH MILLIONS OF MODES, AND LONG-DISTANCE QUANTUM NETWORKS. HOWEVER, THESE SYSTEMS SCALABILITY ANDPRACTICAL DEPLOYMENT FACE SIGNIFICANT OBSTACLES DUE TO THE NEED FOR ACTIVE STABILIZATION OF BULKY DISCRETECOMPONENTS AND PRECISE FREE-SPACE ALIGNMENT. INTEGRATED PHOTONICS HAS EMERGED AS A VIABLE SOLUTION TOOVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES. IT PERMITS THE INTEGRATION OF NUMEROUS COMPONENTS FOR GENERATING, MANIPULATING,AND DETECTING QUANTUM STATES OF LIGHT ON A SINGLE CHIP, FACILITATING STABLE QUANTUM OPERATIONS ANDCOMPLEX QUANTUM CIRCUITS THAT CAN EXPLOIT THE FULL POTENTIAL OF PHOTONIC QUANTUM TECHNOLOGIES.A PROMINENT APPLICATION OF PHOTONIC QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY IS QUANTUM-ENHANCED DETECTION TO SURPASSTHE QUANTUM SHOT-NOISE LIMIT (SNL) PRESENT IN CLASSICAL SYSTEMS 1 . SUCH MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES,FOR INSTANCE, PROVIDE SENSITIVITY AND PRECISION BEYOND THE SNL FOR DETECTING MICROSCOPIC FLUCTUATIONSIN PHYSICAL PARAMETERS SUCH AS POSITION, AS DEMONSTRATED IN LIGO 2 . THE CORE IDEA BEHIND THESETECHNIQUES IS TO IMPRINT THE UNKNOWN PHYSICAL QUANTITY ONTO THE SUB-SHOT-NOISE OBSERVABLE OF QUANTUMPROBES. SQUEEZED STATES OF LIGHT, SERVING AS THESE PROBES, HAVE BEEN WIDELY UTILIZED IN APPLICATIONS RANGINGFROM FUNDAMENTAL SCIENCES TO DEVELOPING NOVEL SENSING AND IMAGING TECHNOLOGIES. HOWEVER, DESPITETHEIR SIGNIFICANT IMPORTANCE, THE GENERATION AND MEASUREMENT OF SQUEEZING IN INTEGRATED PHOTONICS HAVEBEEN LIMITED.IN THIS PROGRAM, WE PROPOSE TO CONSTRUCT A NANOPHOTONIC SYSTEM THAT ENCOMPASSES A SQUEEZER, HIGH GAINMEASUREMENT OPTICAL AMPLIFIER, PUMP GENERATOR, PHASE-STABLE PROGRAMMABLE INTERFEROMETERS, ANDBALANCED HOMODYNE DETECTOR (BHD) ALL INTEGRATED ON THE EMERGENT THIN-FILM LITHIUM NIOBATE (TFLN)ON INSULATOR PLATFORM.
