About this award

The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded a Cooperative Agreement totaling $132,867 to the Indiana State Board of Animal Health on April 1, 2026, under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025).

The award funds animal disease traceability infrastructure maintenance and administration through March 31, 2027. The Board will maintain USAHERDS, SCS CORE ONE, and private state systems to support information sharing; provide data access when needed; and work with producers and veterinarians to promote traceability technologies. Specific activities include completing trace performance measure exercises, administering official animal identification, managing electronic records for searchability of animal disease traceability data, conducting outreach and communication, and performing compliance and enforcement activities for traceability regulations. The Board will conduct quarterly market inspections and promote electronic tags for sheep, goats, and cervids; track quarterly the number of IDs shipped and associated tag numbers, sources, and destinations; enter data into USAHERDS and AGENTERPRISE systems; track accredited veterinarians trained on the VET-CVI application; and track quarterly the number of premise IDs present on chronic wasting disease tests, bovine caudal fold tests, and intrastate/interstate certificates of veterinary inspection. Expected outcomes include distributing 24,000 NUES tags for sheep and goats and distributing 25,000 additional tags. Work is performed in Indiana.

Description

Activities
Activities include completing trace performance measure exercises, administration of official animal identification, information sharing, creating electronic records for the searchability of ADT data, conduct outreach and communication, and to perform compliance and enforcement activities of traceability regulations. If these activities do not continue, animal health programs and responses to animal disease events will be slowed, potentially resulting in the spread of disease with negative consequences to animals and the economy. The indiana state board of animal health (boah) conducts market inspections quarterly and promote electronic tags in sheep, goats and cervids. Boah also encourages producers and markets to purchase rfid tags directly from manufacturers. Boah tracks quarterly the number of IDS shipped and associated numbers on the tags, the source and destination. Boahs uses and enters data in the usaherds and/or agenterprise database system tag information, movement data, recording tracing and new premises that have been identified. Boah will enter data to track the number of accredited veterinarians trained to use the VET-CVI application. Boah will track quarterly the number of premise IDS that were present on chronic wasting disease (CWD) tests, bovine caudal fold tests, and intrastate/interstate certificates of veterinary inspection (CVI).
