About this award

The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded Colorado State University a $209,569 cooperative agreement on April 1, 2026, under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) to conduct poultry health monitoring, surveillance, and response activities in Colorado through March 31, 2027.

Colorado State University will perform 60–70 trips annually to National Poultry Improvement Plan flocks for pullorum-typhoid testing, biosecurity site inspections, and avian influenza virus surveillance sample collection; conduct 25 visits to poultry flocks for site collections, biosecurity audits, and educational seminars; and test approximately 2,500 avian influenza virus samples from direct submissions by NPIP producers. The recipient will distribute 15 avian influenza virus surveillance kits based on case presentation, make 4–6 visits to live-bird markets, swaps, and auctions for surveillance and biosecurity education, and participate in major poultry shows and 10–12 county fairs statewide. Additional deliverables include five feedstore visits, processing 200 cases of sick bird calls and necropsies annually through Colorado State University's diagnostic laboratory, managing 1–20 avian helpline calls daily, conducting 700 avian influenza virus tests from live-bird markets and backyard flocks, performing three gross necropsies, testing approximately 20 other avian disease cases, and attending 4 trainings or conferences annually.
