About this award

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded Electradx Molecular LLC a $1.707616 million Cooperative Agreement on February 2, 2026, under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) to develop and validate a point-of-need avian influenza molecular assay for field testing.

Electradx Molecular will design and validate a highly sensitive and specific molecular assay, certify a battery power addition, and implement veterinary services-specific software improvements to a second-generation field-deployable diagnostic platform. The recipient will deliver an all-in-one testing system capable of rapid, reliable on-site detection of high-pathogenicity avian influenza with molecular-level accuracy at any location with a flat surface. During the first year of performance, Electradx Molecular will complete all critical development and manufacturing activities for the assay and reader. In the final five months, the recipient will prepare all validation materials and submit the complete system to the Center for Veterinary Biologics for licensing. The recipient will also scale production capacity to support future demand.

Performance occurs in San Diego, California, with a completion date of January 15, 2027. The funding enables poultry farmers, APHIS veterinary services, veterinary networks, and public health officials to reduce avian influenza spread among flocks, expedite and lower testing costs, improve surveillance, and help stabilize egg supply and pricing.

Description

Soar, surveillance and onsite avian influenza response through this cooperative agreement, electradx molecular, in partnership with the U.S. Department of agriculture (USDA) animal and plant health inspection service (ahpis) will develop and validate a point of need avian influenza molecular assay for fast, accurate, field testing to reduce spread among flocks, improve surveillance, and help stabilize EGG supply and pricing. The test will be developed by an experienced, highly successful scientific team for the second-generation device of an existing, low-cost, field-deployable diagnostic platform. The second-generation device leveraged by this proposal is 'development complete' and ready for scale up. By bringing fast, accurate molecular testing to the field this project will enable rapid, reliable, on-site detection of hpai, that will help reduce spread among flocks by expediting and reducing the cost of avian influenza testing and surveillance to help stabilize EGG supply and pricing. The first year of the cooperative agreement will deliver all critical development and manufacturing activities for the assay and reader, and the last 5 months will deliver all validation materials and submit the product to the center for veterinary biologics (CVB) for licensing. The recipient will design and validate a highly sensitive and specific molecular assay, certify a battery power addition and make veterinary services (VS) specific software improvements to the existing device to deliver a high-performance all-in-one testing system to benefit poultry farmers, aphis VS, veterinary networks, and public health officials by enabling fast, accurate and cost-effective molecular diagnostics anywhere with a flat surface. To ensure that this technology is accessible whenever and wherever needed, as part of this proposal the recipient will appropriately scale production capacity of the test and reader to support future demand and will submit the complete system to the CVB for licensing. With appropriate licensing, 800 units will be provided to high priority locations for immediate impact and the product will be available on the market requiring little training or ramp up time, as proven with the clia waived workflow which will save overhead costs and benefit veterinarians and animal health professionals.
