Cooperative Agreement AP25VSSPRS00C136
- This federal Cooperative Agreement award of $396,875.00 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) aims to assist cervid herd owners in Wisconsin in reducing the susceptibility of their herds to Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). The key products and services to be delivered include: 1) Providing genomically estimated breeding value (GEBV) testing to identify...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) provides $162,800.00 to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to assist cervid herd owners in reducing susceptibility to chronic wasting disease (CWD) through genomically estimated breeding value (GEBV) testing, removal of highly susceptible animals, and selective breeding. The...
- This $181,362 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) aims to provide a herd management option for white-tailed deer in Indiana to improve genetic resistance to chronic wasting disease (CWD). The project will utilize whole genome predictive genetics to identify and remove deer that are highly susceptible to CWD, reducing...
- This Cooperative Agreement award, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025), aims to generate genomically estimated breeding values (GEBVs) and PRNP genotypes for 1,000 samples from farmed CWD-susceptible species (white-tailed deer, elk, and/or mule deer). The objective is to support genetic improvement related to chronic wasting disease (CWD) resistance...
- The purpose of this $239,008 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) under the Wildlife Services program (CFDA 10.028) is to improve the management of chronic wasting disease (CWD)-affected wild cervid populations. The key activities to be performed include: Conducting a comprehensive literature review to identify and evaluate reliable, standardizable methods for estimating white-tailed deer population...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) provides $240,000 to develop a minimally-invasive test that can detect chronic wasting disease (CWD) in live deer at early stages. The goal is to create a sensitive, accurate, and reproducible blood test that can monitor live deer and detect CWD early, which would help prevent the...
- This Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care grant program (CFDA 10.025), provides funding of $205,913 to Texas A&M AgriLife Research to develop and implement a herd management option for a Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)-positive white-tailed deer herd. The project aims to effectively clean up the CWD-positive herd without requiring...
- This Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) under the Wildlife Services program (CFDA 10.028), is intended to improve the management of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in wild cervid populations. The $176,250 award, effective from September 30, 2024 through September 30, 2025, will enable the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to increase preparedness for CWD surveillance, expand diagnostic capacity,...
- This Cooperative Agreement awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care federal grant program (CFDA 10.025) provides a management option for a large CWD-positive white-tailed deer herd. The $249,820 award, granted on September 15, 2024, supports the removal of CWD-positive deer identified through ante-mortem IHC rectal biopsy, as well as deer highly susceptible to CWD based...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) is focused on developing innovative tools and enhanced management practices to reduce the prevalence of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in farmed white-tailed deer and elk. The $222,335 award to Texas A&M AgriLife Research will leverage previous research demonstrating the...
THIS PROJECT INTENDS TO PROVIDE CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE (CWD) PREVENTION BY ASSISTING CERVID HERD OWNERS IN REDUCING THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THEIR HERDS THROUGH GENOMICALLY ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUE (GEBV) TESTING, REMOVAL OF HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE ANIMALS FROM THE BREEDING POPULATION, AND SELECTIVE BREEDING FOR REDUCED SUSCEPTIBLY. IT ALSO PROVIDES A CWD HERD MANAGEMENT OPTION FOR CWD-POSITIVE, -EXPOSED, AND TRACE HERDS WHEN INDEMNITY IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR WHOLE HERD DEPOPULATION, OR AN OWNER DOES NOT WISH TO DEPOPULATE THEIR HERD. THIS OPTION REMOVES CWD-POSITIVE ANIMALS IDENTIFIED BY ANTE MORTEM RECTAL BIOPSY TESTING AND IDENTIFIES CERVIDS THAT ARE HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO CWD AS IDENTIFIED USING THEIR GEBV SCORES. REMOVING HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE EXPOSED AND POSITIVE ANIMALS HELPS REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION AND MAY LIMIT THE SPREAD OF CWD WHEN COUPLED WITH SELECTIVE BREEDING BASED ON PREDICTIVE GENETICS. DECREASING SUSCEPTIBILITY IN UNAFFECTED HERDS MAY REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF INTRODUCTION OF CWD AND REDUCE OR ELIMINATE SPREAD TO OR FROM WILD DEER ACROSS THE FENCE LINE. AS A RESULT, THIS PROJECT WILL BENEFIT CERVID PRODUCERS IN THE STATE AND POSSIBLY WILD CERVID POPULATIONS. THIS APPROACH PROVIDES AN ALTERNATIVE TO WHOLE HERD DEPOPULATION TO HELP MANAGE CWD IN FARMED DEER. THIS PROJECT ALSO INTENDS TO AID IN THE MANAGEMENT OF INDIANA'S HERD CERTIFICATION PROGRAM (HCP). THE HCP REDUCES THE RISK OF INTERSTATE CWD SPREAD AND INCREASES TRADE CONFIDENCE OF CERVID ANIMALS AND PRODUCTS. THIS PROPOSAL DOES NOT INCLUDE SUBAWARDS.
