Description

The approach represents additional tools for the identification of this group of insects commonly intercepted in seeds for propagation and consumption at U.S. Ports of entry. Seed beetles are notoriously difficult to identify, in part because of their convergent, interspecific morphological evolution associated with developing within seeds. In addition, they have elevated levels of intraspecific variation in morphological characters associated with allometric scaling, due to variations in the sizes of seeds within which they develop. All this is compounded by the fact that identification tools for seed beetles are scattered throughout the literature, the geographically limited keys are extremely challenging to use and are often outdated, and the diversity of the group outside of the holarctic region is not well known.
