Description
The approach is based on engineering flies to carry CAS9 and guide rnas that target specific genes for suppression. The benefit that this project offers is that the number of sterile males can be doubled by altering SEX determination such that genetically female flies develop as functional male flies. Moreover, this approach avoids a reduction in performance due to somatic damage caused by irradiation while also removing radiation as a risk for workers.
