Description
This proposal is an integral part of our long-range plan guiding the replacement, preventative maintenance, operation, and innovation to keep all program functions operating at top capacity. This is accomplished by: introducing citrus germplasm under quarantine, conducting molecular diagnostic testing of all program varieties and source trees, certifying promising breeding lines as parent trees, and preserving and distributing foundation trees and propagative material. The foundation propagative material is accessible to commercial florida nurseries, as well as to national and international breeders, researchers, and other citrus clean plant centers. IT is maintained in a 4-acre, five greenhouse facility in chiefland, FL that houses over 2,300 trees and over 900 varieties in total and growing. The fbcbr annually tests all source trees-this includes all foundation trees and scion blocks in the state. Currently, there are 23 participating nurseries with scion source tree blocks, this makes for over 3,200 scion source trees tested annually by the fbcbr. Ultimately, the florida bureau of citrus budwood registration was responsible for ensuring that the nearly 4 million citrus propagations made last year alone were certified free of pathogens. This program benefits florida citrus producers, and local hobbyists and growers.
