Description

Document BTM phenology, native natural enemies attacking BTM, and evaluating both 1) an area-wide suppression trial for BTM using mating disruption (MD) and BTK (bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki) applications and 2) insecticide treatments for BTM control in its new invasive range in the US. The proposed work supports developing control tools to support BTM program goals and the US nursery industry. Trapping and visual surveys will be conducted to determine the seasonal phenology of the moth in areas of niagara county, NY. Survey of existing BTM populations in western new york will be conducted to determine the natural enemy fauna that may be impacting this invasive species. Additionally, prototype pheromone dispensers will be placed in a selected area as part of the mating disruption trial in western NY in combination with a bioinsecticide. BTM populations will be monitored in the test sites to determine how the area-wide suppression trial impact pest populations. Also, insecticide treatments and their residual activity will be evaluated against BTM larvae under field conditions. Field data that can be used in phenology models to forecast pest emergence and activity. A list that catalogs naturally occurring beneficial arthropods potentially preying upon BTM under field conditions. Field data to understand the performance of mating disruption and targeted treatments in urban landscapes as part of an area wide management strategy to suppress and slow the spread of BTM. Performance evaluation of several insecticides against BTM, showing both direct and residual effects in boxwoods. Understanding of the local pest phenology, existing natural enemies, mating disruption with targeted bioinsecticide treatments, and a list of proven efficacy of insecticide products is the basis for the development of an integrated pest management program. The beneficiaries of this information will be for the boxwood producers, and professionals (e.g. federal, state, and extension) that intend to manage the box tree moth. There will be no sub awards under this agreement.
