About this award
This two-year cooperative agreement award of $101,707 from the Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service will fund a project at Michigan State University to assess radial growth and canopy condition of eastern hemlock trees treated with imidacloprid or dinotefuran to control hemlock woolly adelgid. Specifically, the awardee will quantify annual and mean radial growth and current condition of 110 hemlock trees with known histories of hemlock woolly adelgid infestation and systemic insecticide treatment. By building on six years of prior research with the same trees, the project provides a unique opportunity to integrate insecticide data with hemlock woolly adelgid impacts and host tree recovery. Project results will be summarized in a final report and peer-reviewed scientific journals. The funding supports the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care federal grant program's goal of protecting U.S. agriculture from economically injurious plant and animal diseases and pests.
Description
The primary purpose of this project is to assess radial growth andcanopy condition of eastern hemlock (tsuga canadensis) trees treatedwith imidacloprid or dinotefuran to control hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)(adelges tsugae annand). This project will quantify annual and meanradial growth and current condition of 110 hemlock trees with knownhistories of HWA and systemic insecticide treatment. Our project, whichbuilds on six years of research with these same trees, provides a uniqueopportunity to integrate insecticide data (efficacy, translocationrates, persistence/residues) with HWA impacts, and host (hemlock)recovery (radial growth, canopy condition, HWA infestation orre-infestation). The status and results of project activities will besummarized in a final report as well as in several peer-reviewedscientific journals. The benefits of this project include a wide varietyof stakeholders who manage or are directly impacted by HWA infestationsthat destructively feed upon hemlocks. There areno subawards on thisproject/agreement.
