About this award

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a $1,500,000 Cooperative Agreement to the Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel under the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) Grant Program (CFDA 66.920). The purpose of this award is to enhance the tribe's efforts to manage post-consumer materials and divert approximately 21 tons of waste from landfills. The Iipay Nation will use the funding to build and staff a small-scale sorting and transfer station, implement an outreach campaign, and conduct activities aligned with the "5 Rs" of post-consumer materials management - recovering, reusing, recycling, repairing, and refurbishing appropriate materials. The anticipated deliverables include an integrated solid waste management plan, a quality assurance plan, equipment purchase summaries, training certificates, and data logs on waste collected and diverted. The expected outcomes include increased awareness of circular economy principles, greater community participation in the tribe's solid waste management program, and a cleaner environment with healthier tribal residents.
