About this award

This $653,120 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) Grant Program will enable the Shingle Springs Rancheria (Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians) to enhance its recycling infrastructure and waste diversion efforts. The funding will be used to establish a recycling center on the tribal reservation, including the purchase of new equipment such as scales, crushers, balers, sorting equipment, trucks, and forklifts. Additionally, the tribe will hire a Recycling Coordinator to oversee the expanded recycling program. The anticipated outcomes include a decrease in municipal solid waste generation and an increase in waste diversion from landfills and incineration through improved source reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting capabilities for the tribal community. This award, with a performance period from May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2027, is part of the EPA's broader initiative to support environmentally sound post-consumer materials management and waste reduction efforts in tribal and disadvantaged communities.
