About this award

The County of Maui received a $1.53 million Cooperative Agreement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 9 under the Congressionally Mandated Projects program (CFDA 66.202), effective July 1, 2025, with a completion date of September 30, 2029. This agreement funds the Haiku-Kauhikoa Tank Replacement Project, which involves the demolition and replacement of a deteriorated 250,000-gallon water storage tank constructed in 1998. The original tank has experienced significant capacity loss due to upper-half leakage, reducing its usable capacity by approximately 50 percent. The replacement infrastructure includes a new 250,000-gallon stainless steel bolted tank, associated valves, inflow and outflow piping, and site paving work.

The project encompasses four primary tasks: tank procurement, precast vault procurement, installation of valves and waterlines, and tank installation. No subawards are included in this assistance agreement. The anticipated deliverables include a post-construction on-site project review by EPA or its delegate, quarterly progress reports, and draft and final project reports. Expected outcomes include increased water availability for consumption, reduced risk of wildfire-related water loss, and enhanced community satisfaction through elimination of water loss from the leaking tank, thereby promoting water conservation objectives in Maui County.
