Description
Specifically, the recipient will build upon the successes of their 2020-2022 wetland program development grant (wpdp) by conducting three separate projects 1) demonstrate wetland losses and gains overtime throughout the district of columbia; 2) increase public awareness of changes in wetland condition or stressors; and 3) engage with environmental stakeholders and educate and raise awareness of the value and benefits of wetlands.activities:project 1, which will enhance wetland mapping and monitoring for D.C., involves making publicly available maps that demonstrate historic wetland losses and current trends, including planned/ongoing restoration work throughout the district. Once the map has been created and finalized, a storymap (or similar tool) will be created and provided to the public to better tell the story of wetland trends in D.C. Over time. Finally, 2016 wetland monitoring data will be archived and monitoring data from 2022 onward will become publicly available and then linked to individual wetland records in the DC aquatic resources registry. Project 2, which will help build wetland program outreach and education capacity for doee, involves developing a self-guided wetland audio tour and supplementary outreach media to be used by the public at kingman and heritage island. This project will be completed in partnership with the living classrooms foundation and aims to provide in-depth educational wetland content for the public to increase understanding and visibility of wetland ecosystems.subrecipient:no subawards are included in this assistance agreement.outcomes:the anticipated deliverables include the creation and publication of interactive wetland maps that can show historical and current trends of wetland loss in the district of columbia, the creation of a storymap to educate the public on the history of DC's wetlands, increased monitoring and assessment data being made publicly available through the wetland registry, and the creation and promotion of a self-guided audio tour educating the public about wetlands on kingman and heritage islands. The expected outcomes include increasing stakeholder's and decisionmaker's understanding of changes in wetland extent over time, especially as a result of climate change and man-made disturbances, increased protection of wetlands from better public access to wetland mapping, and increased stakeholder and decisionmaker support for wetland restoration efforts in areas of historic wetland coverage. Additionally, the creation of an audio tour on kingman and heritage islands is expected to increase visitor engagement and awareness of wetland functions and benefits, helping to reach new park patrons and spread awareness of this new nature engagement option. The intended beneficiaries include residents and visitors of the district of columbia.
