Description
Charnley is P.I. The scientific tasks involve theoretical and observational research on the molecular chemistry of comets interstellar molecular clouds and in the early protosolar nebula. Chemical connections will also be made to the organic composition of the present solar system particularly to prebiotic molecules. Funds for this work come from awards made to DRS. Charnley under the gsfc flare internal scientist funding model (isfm) and the NASA goddard center for astrobiology. DRS. JIN and dufour will work with DRS. Charnley and cordiner with support from these awards. NASA and gsfc isfm review panels evaluated the proposed scientific proposals competitively and selected them for funding. The proposed cooperative agreement establishes the vehicle for implementing that research. The present unsolicited proposal from catholic university is consistent with the approved research and IT will advance the scientific state-of-the-art. The research described in this proposal will significantly impact our understanding of the galactic chemical evolution of organic matter. IT will yield important insights into the origin of organic matter in the solar system particularly that of comets and their connection with the origins of our planetary system and of planetary systems elsewhere. These are amongst the key questions for space & earth sciences defined by NASA. IT will produce important data concerning the organic chemistry and isotopic profiles of the interstellar medium protostellar environments and comets thus providing deep insights to organic matter elsewhere in the solar system. The work proposed is directly complementary to measurements carried out by the hubble space telescope and observations with jwst. IT is relevant to various NASA r & a programs e.g. solar system workings solar system observations exobiology and emerging worlds as well as to the astrophysics theory program. DRS. JIN and dufour will work full time at goddard with DRS. Cordiner and charnley. The requested salary is consistent with market conditions for persons of their experience and qualifications and for the level of contribution specified. Travel support is requested for JIN cordiner and dufour to attend scientific meetings and to support cordiner in leading an upcoming cometary observing campaign. The amounts requested are reasonable and consistent with the proposed research. The overhead and benefits are also consistent with current standards. The proposed work will advance our understanding of interstellar nebular and cometary chemistry by conducting state-of-the-art research through theoretical modeling and multi-wavelength spectroscopy and publishing the results in the refereed scientific literature. This work will improve our knowledge of the connection between molecular cloud chemistry just before the solar system formed and the composition of comets.
