24-2024EPSCOR-0016 ARC: prospecting and pre-colonization of the moon and mars using autonomous robots with human-in-the-loop

This Cooperative Agreement award, funded by the NASA Office of STEM Engagement (OSTEM) program (CFDA 43.008), provides $748,245 to the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027. The award supports scientific research, technology development, and educational initiatives focused on prospecting and pre-colonization of the Moon and Mars using autonomous robots with human-in-the-loop control. Key products and services include:

Energy-aware autonomous environmental sampling to map resources, volatiles, and potential hazards on the lunar and Martian surfaces, and surface engineering capabilities to clear rocks and treat dust in preparation for human colony establishment. This work will facilitate efficient human supervision and coordination of off-planetary prospecting and site clearing efforts. The award includes sub-grants to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the University of Nevada, Reno, and the Desert Research Institute to leverage their expertise in space exploration, robotics, and environmental sciences.
