Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of this project is to develop a comprehensive, non-commercial, and technology-agnostic guide to help users select and implement 3D imaging systems for robotic BIN picking. With many technologies using different principles and inconsistent terminology, the guide will simplify comparisons, clarify options, and provide practical steps for translating application needs into technical requirements. IT will bridge the GAP between scattered information and effective adoption, reducing time, cost, and risk, especially for small and medium-sized manufacturers with limited expertise, while accelerating the successful deployment of BIN picking solutions.
- Activities
- The proposal will perform the following three activities: (1) they will identify and consolidate technology descriptions and establish a common vocabulary for 3D vision-guided robotic BIN picking. With a wide variety of technologies and inconsistent terminology currently in use, this step is essential to reduce confusion and support informed decision-making. A comprehensive market and technology analysis will be conducted, including hands-on evaluation of commercially available imaging systems and real-world application studies. (2) an initial draft of the full guideline will be developed based on extensive firsthand experience in 3D imaging, analysis, and vision-guided robotics. This draft will undergo a rigorous peer review process, incorporating iterative revisions informed by broad input from experts across the technical community to ensure the guide is accurate, comprehensive, and widely applicable. (3) the completed guide will be submitted through the appropriate channels for formal review and approval, supporting its consideration and adoption across the robotics and manufacturing industries. This guide will serve as a unique and trusted independent resource for a broad audience across manufacturing and industrial automation. Unlike vendor-specific materials, IT will offer a comprehensive overview applicable to all relevant technologies and use cases in vision-guided robotic BIN picking. The guide will provide end users with a centralized, authoritative source of essential information to support the successful specification, implementation, and validation of 3D BIN picking solutions.
- Expected outcomes
- Deployment of the proposed methodologies will address the key challenge of guiding the selection and implementation of 3D imaging systems for robotic BIN picking, which is a critical area within advanced manufacturing. The resulting guide will serve as a foundational element in broader initiatives to standardize 3D imaging technologies and their applications, complementing existing efforts such as the validation of 3D BIN picking solutions. IT will enhance industry-wide understanding of these advanced technologies, promoting more consistent, efficient, and successful adoption. By accelerating the adoption of these technologies, the guide will contribute to improved productivity, quality, and flexibility across multiple sectors, reinforcing the united states? Leadership in advanced manufacturing.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Results of this project will benefit robot end users, robot vendors, robot systems integrators, manufacturers, and U.S. Industry.
- Subrecipient activities
- The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
