About this award
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) awarded a $121,822 Cooperative Agreement under the Measurement and Engineering Research and Standards (CFDA 11.609) program to Clemson University Division of Research. The purpose of this 3-year grant, awarded on February 15, 2024, is to perform high-precision measurements and analysis of spectra from highly-charged ions to study nuclear effects and level population dynamics on atomic spectra. The recipient will record extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray spectra from multiply-ionized heavy element atoms using specialized instrumentation, as well as measure nuclear radii differences for several elements. The expected outcomes include improved understanding of interactions between nuclei and atomic electrons, and the production of new high-precision atomic data to be included in the NIST Atomic Spectra Database. Clemson University, a leading public research institution and land-grant university, will leverage its extensive expertise and research capabilities to deliver these scientific results in support of NIST's mission.
Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of this grant is to perform high-precision measurements and analysis of spectra from highly-charged ions to study nuclear effects and level population dynamics on atomic spectra.
- Activities
- EUV and x-RAY spectra from multiply-ionized atoms of heavy elements will be recorded using grazing-incidence spectrometer and transition-edge microcalorimeter. Density dependence of electric-octupole line intensities will be studied for a number of high-z elements. Nuclear radii differences will be measured and calculated for several elements.
- Expected outcomes
- The results of this project will improve our understanding of interactions between nuclei and atomic electrons and produce new high-precision atomic data to be included into the NIST atomic spectra database.
- Intended beneficiaries
- The proposed work will contribute to the better knowledge of atomic processes and spectra which will inevitably enhance the general public interest to science. Moreover, the new atomic data will contribute to a better production of semiconductor products of use in all fields of life.
- Subrecipient activities
- The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
