Description

Purpose
The purpose of this grant is to develop a performance-based WUI fire resilience assessment model based on the anatomization of wildland urban interface fire outcomes into the detailed performance attributes concerning wildfire, the built environment, and humanity and their complex cause-effect interdependencies for the four emergency management phases: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
Activities
The wildland urban interface fire resilience assessment model utilizes content analysis based on the grounded theory methodology in which meanings are extracted by analyzing qualitative data, such as the content of documents. Performance attributes and their interdependencies are identified for: building codes for WUI, safety guides, WUI fire investigation reports, news media, and interview content to identify the GAP between the intended and actual WUI fire resilience. The extracted qualitative data will be mapped and quantified using the weighted SUM method and analytical hierarchy process; numeric values will be assigned to the performance attributes based on a site survey for a community.
Expected outcomes
This research is expected to enable quantification of wildland urban interface fire resilience which has been traditionally a qualitative and descriptive parameter.
Intended beneficiaries
The developed model will serve as a learning material and communication basis among various stakeholders such as WUI residents, firefighters, and building officials by using the model.
Subrecipient activities
The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
