Description

Purpose
The purpose of this grant is to create measurements and indicators that allow decision-makers to optimize the circularity of materials within product life cycles.
Activities
Activities will include developing a lifecycle model for engines. This engine-specific model will identify the particular challenges that hinder the circularity of engines and reveal improvement opportunities in terms of engine design and end-of-life management decisions. The project will develop similar models and lifecycle data for server assemblies. The project will model product life cycles using markov chain and new circularity indicators and apply a stochastic activity network (SAN) to engine and server assembly cases. Finally, the project will provide decision-making guidelines using various indicators that have been developed in previous tasks. These guidelines will provide insights on how to prioritize and improve circularity in terms of product design and manufacturing processes. Expected outcome: data associated with the proposed indicators will be collected and a methodology developed to assess the effectiveness of these indicators in deciding the best circularity management option. The proposed efforts will build on and complement the existing work of the engineering lab systems integration division to provide standards and indicators to measure circularity in product life cycles. The project will introduce new indicators related to circular economy and contribute to ISO technical committee 323 standards.
Intended beneficiaries
The research will benefit U.S. Manufacturers and consumers by improving the reuse and recycling of consumer products saving energy and reducing emissions. A transition to a circular economy subrecipient activities: the recipient does not intend to sub-award funds.
