Description

Activities
The proposed research includes development of quantum packaging approaches that incorporate planar microfabricated optical components, such as gratings, multilayer dielectric mirrors, waveguides and metasurfaces. As a first example, an all-dielectric atomic vapor cell capable of guiding laser beams through multiple reflections will be developed. Unique microfabrication processes that have been developed by the proposed for encapsulation atomic vapors in all-dielectric vapor cells will be further enhanced for better performance, larger scale and improved functionality of patterned planar optics and photonics. Rydberg electrometer function will be studied as an application of the developed technology.
Expected outcomes
The researchers will develop and demonstrate technologies necessary to achieve new types of microfabricated transducers coupling light with atomic vapors. By enabling such transducers, this research will open up new possibilities for metrology using warm vapors in compact and mass-producible devices, including highly parallel measurements, directional radio frequency sensing and other new applications.
Intended beneficiaries
NIST research activities will benefit from access to technology and devices for packaging of atomic vapors tightly integrated with photonics, in particular but not limited to the application for rydberg atom radio frequency metrology. The global research community will benefit from the demonstration and validation of new approaches and techniques for atomic-photonic integration in microfabricated transducers. The recipient will benefit by developing technologies and devices enabling a wide range of follow-on research in this area.
Subrecipient activities
The recipient does not intend to sub-award funds.
