About this award
The University of Massachusetts Lowell will receive $199,556 under a cooperative agreement award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Measurement and Engineering Research and Standards program (CFDA 11.609) to assist with the promotion and adoption of the Manufacturing Objects and Assemblies Dataset (MOAD). Specifically, UMass Lowell will replicate the MOAD data collection rig to evaluate documentation quality, distribute the MOAD object set including four assembly task boards to researchers, and explore using the rig to update other similarly constructed datasets with physical objects and accompanying digital assets. The award period is from August 1, 2022 through January 31, 2024. No subawards are planned under this cooperative agreement.
Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of this grant is to assist with the promotion and adoption of the manufacturing objects and assemblies dataset (moad) dataset and data collection practices throughout the research community. The moad project is developing a dataset with physical objects and corresponding digital assets of those objects to support robot manufacturing and assembly research.
- Activities
- University of massachusetts, lowell will perform the following three activities:1. Replication of the moad data collection RIG. The moad datacollection RIG will be replicated in order to evaluate the quality and accuracy of thedocumentation generated by NIST. 2. Distribution of the moad object set. The moad includes the four nistassembly task boards (atbs). UML already distributes NIST-ATB #1 to the research community as a service through the nerve center and will apply the same methodology to the other task boards that will be included in the moad dataset (and potentially other objects) by fabricating and distributing them to researchers to promote the availability and use of the moad. 3. Supporting generation and updating of other datasets. University of massachusetts, lowell will explore how the moad data collection RIG could be used to update other datasets that are constructed similarly (i.e., provision of physical objects accompanied by 3D scans and photos of those objects), in order to broaden the impact of this work.
