About this award
The U.S. Department of Transportation's Office of Research, Development and Technology awarded a $7.5 million Cooperative Agreement to Rutgers University's Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) under the Research Initiative on the Use of Steel Slag in Concrete and Cement (CFDA 20.949). Effective August 11, 2025, through August 10, 2030, this five-year research initiative will establish and advance research on the properties, effectiveness, and applications of steel slag for use in cement manufacturing, concrete admixtures, road base materials, aggregates, and other innovative construction applications for transportation infrastructure. The research will support the Department of Transportation's decarbonization and embodied carbon reduction priorities by investigating how steel slag can sustainably replace traditional construction materials and reduce associated carbon emissions.
The project is structured as a cost-reimbursement Cooperative Agreement with a 50% non-federal cost share requirement. Rutgers will lead the research effort in collaboration with sub-awardees Oregon State University, University of Florida, and New Jersey Institute of Technology. Deliverables include six sequential research steps designed to investigate steel slag's chemical, physical, mechanical, and durability characteristics through laboratory and field testing. The final products will comprise multiple technical reports and a comprehensive research compendium documenting findings on slag utilization by industry, intended to inform industry adoption and advance the nation's decarbonization goals for construction materials and transportation infrastructure.
Description
