Description
Over time, as an industry changes, market information collection and reporting must be revised to remain relevant and useful to market participants. The FED cattle and beef sector has experienced dramatic structural changes since enactment of livestock mandatory reporting (LMR) some 20 years ago. Structural changes challenge USDA AMS LMR collection of primary data, data processing, and public reporting of market information on FED cattle and beef. Addressing challenges requires periodic assessments and subsequent adjustments to provide adequate market transparency. This study will: 1) assess usefulness and limitations of data as they are currently reported; 2) document how data are currently used by industry participants; and 3) propose possible modifications to LMR procedures in light of major changes that have occurred, and are expected to be forthcoming, in FED cattle and beef markets.
