The project aims to improve the single-pass capture and mineralization rate and optimize solvent recovery to enable cost-effective capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial emission sources and transform it into value-added products. This will help the industrial...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $981,840 Cooperative Agreement to Renewco2 Inc., a small disadvantaged business, to develop a scalable CO2 electrolyzer system for the competitive carbon-negative production of formic acid. The project aims to create an electrocatalytic process that can convert CO2 and electricity into formic acid, a valuable industrial chemical used in agriculture, leather treatment, and environmentally-friendly deicing. By utilizing waste CO2 from sources like...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $100,000 Project Grant under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program to the University of Wisconsin-Madison to develop a direct air capture technology for carbon dioxide sequestration. The university will utilize industrial waste materials and a two-step mineral carbonation method to directly capture CO2 from the atmosphere and store it as a stable mineral. This has the potential to offer a low-cost solution for permanent CO2 removal on a...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $275,000 Project Grant to Carbon Solutions LLC under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084). The grant will support development of a decision-support tool to identify carbon dioxide capture opportunities across the United States energy sector from 2023-2024. The tool aims to facilitate the country's transition to net-zero carbon emissions through profiling capturable CO2 streams and providing the break-even capture cost,...
- This Project Grant award, provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program, supports the development of a light-based, energy-generating carbon removal process. The $274,094 award to Banyu Carbon Inc. aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by sequestering or reusing captured carbon dioxide. Key objectives include improving the resistance of the proprietary photoacid catalyst to degradation and replacing expensive...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $274,724 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant to Mantel Capture, Inc. to optimize the composition of novel molten alkali metal borates for carbon dioxide capture. The goal of this project is to develop a molten salt-based carbon capture system that can be applied to hard-to-abate industries such as industrial heat, cement, steel, and hydrogen production. The research aims to reduce the melting point and working temperature of the...
- This $250,000 Project Grant was awarded on July 10, 2023 by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science under the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program (CFDA 81.049) to Media And Process Technology Inc., a minority-owned, for-profit manufacturer. The funding supports the company's research and development of reactive carbon capture processes to produce on-site green chemicals, through absorbent recycling. Specific efforts include bench-scale testing of ceramic membranes, modules,...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant award under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program provides $272,488.00 to Victory Over Carbon, Inc. to develop a novel direct air carbon capture technology. The project aims to address key challenges in achieving gigaton-scale direct air carbon capture, which could enable a trillion-dollar industry and 3 million jobs in the U.S. The proposed system utilizes a centrifuge design to reduce infrastructure and...
- This $300,000 project grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) program aims to advance electrocatalytic technologies for capturing and converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable fuels like methane and ethylene. The award to Clemson University's Division of Research will fund research to utilize captured (bi)carbonate ions rather than pure CO2 gas as the feedstock for the electrochemical reduction process. This approach seeks to improve the energy...
- The National Science Foundation awarded Circularity Fuels, Inc. a $1.25 million Cooperative Agreement on August 1, 2026, to develop a joule-heated sorbent-enhanced catalysis reactor system for high-purity methane production serving semiconductor and advanced carbon material manufacturing. This award is funded through the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084) as a Small Business Innovation Research Phase II project. The recipient will demonstrate a compact,...
The National Science Foundation awarded Rushnu Inc. a $1.25 million cooperative agreement on August 1, 2026, under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084) to develop and deploy industrial-scale solvent-based gas absorption technology for carbon capture and mineralization. The technology converts carbon dioxide in industrial gas waste streams and chlorinated salts into essential chemical feedstocks including chlorine, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hypochlorite, as well as minerals such as calcium carbonate and sodium carbonate. The system achieves CO₂ absorption and mineralization using 70 percent less energy than conventional methods and reduces operating costs by 50 percent, enabling on-site production of critical chemicals at over 50 percent lower cost than centralized manufacturing while generating revenue from byproducts. The award builds on a small-scale pilot demonstration at a wastewater treatment facility and supports industrial-scale development and deployment. Performance is located in Pleasanton, California. The period of performance runs through July 31, 2028.
