About this award

The University of Central Florida received a $298,839 Cooperative Agreement award from the Department of Homeland Security's Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction office under the National Nuclear Forensics Expertise Development Program (CFDA 97.130). The project aims to investigate the Raman signatures of transition metals in uranium dioxide, a potential component of a radiological dispersal device, and analyze the distribution of these metals between the original material and explosion debris. This research seeks to advance nuclear forensics capabilities by developing specialized techniques for determining the origin and history of radioactive materials involved in potential acts of terrorism or radiological incidents. The award also supports the training of students in nuclear forensics through hands-on experience at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and curriculum enhancements at the University of Central Florida, which is designated as a Hispanic-serving institution. The project is slated for completion by September 29, 2027.

Description

The proposed project aims to investigate the raman signatures of transition metals in uranium dioxide, a potential component of a radiological disperse device (RDD), and focus on their distribution between the original material and explosion debris, linking this way pre- and post-detonation forensics. Understanding how these transition metals are distributed (fractionated) and their raman spectral characteristics could be instrumental in determining the origin and history of a radioactive material involved in a potential act of terrorism or radiological dispersal device incident. This project will develop a skilled workforce in the critical field of nuclear forensics by training students in advanced analytical techniques and by providing them with specialized training in analyzing materials related to nuclear forensics. Collaboration with OAK ridge national laboratory will provide students with hands-on experience and allow them to contribute directly to national security efforts through internships at ornl. Furthermore, the proposed project will directly contribute to nuclear-related curriculum enhancement at the university of central florida. The project aligns with DHS objectives by cultivating future leaders in nuclear forensics, fostering strong university-laboratory partnerships, and expanding capabilities at UCF, particularly as one of the nation s largest hispanic serving institutions.
