Description
The KIM turner foundation, INC. Will use FY23 CPD funding to implement a national training program that will reach a minimum of 5,500 law enforcement officers representing 400 - 500 agencies across the country over a two-year period. Approximately 110 training courses will be held, and the proposed training curriculum will be delivered through two pathways: in-person (approximately 80 classes) and virtually online (approximately 30 classes), meeting the 25% minimum requirement of in-person training. Training will reinforce key concepts and help attendees build practical skills to use on the job. The training will include topic areas like enhancing officers' awareness of cultural differences, promoting unbiased decision-making, and improving community engagement and relations. Procedural justice principles will also be included, emphasizing respect, neutrality, and fairness during interactions with the public. Our training organization will design a comprehensive curriculum that will cover various aspects of key topics. Officers will be taught about different cultures, religions, traditions, and perspectives to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the diverse populations they serve. Instruction will also address unconscious biases and stereotypes that can affect officers decision-making and interactions and provide them tools and strategies to mitigate and manage bias. Effective communication will be a critical component of that overall strategy. Classes will focus on helping officers strengthen active listening and non-confrontational communication skills that will build upon the DE-escalation mindset and positive interactions with individuals of all backgrounds. The adaptation of communication styles based on different cultural contexts and scenarios will also be integrated into the program with the goal of achieving the most effective and positive outcome across a broad range of situations and service calls. The training will be designed to include interactive workshops, case studies, and scenario-based exercises to provide practical and actionable insights into promoting tolerance and inclusivity in daily policing operations.
